Pursuing Dreams and Letting Go of Expectations: Cassie Marin Releases Glimmering Electro-Pop Single “Push Me”
Producer, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Cassie Marin finds empowerment through letting go of expectations when releasing her music for the world to hear. Releasing expectations has allowed the songstress to share her emotions and see how many listeners can relate to her music
Every single release from Marin is an “intricate flower plucked from her consciousness” that’s added to her discography. In her latest glittery, electro-pop single “Push Me,” it’s easy to get lost in the groove of her dreamy soundscapes and angelic melodies. The single serves as an anthem for anyone that’s been restricted artistically and told “no” all the time.
While creating the bones of the song, Marin was in the headspace of the outside world telling her “no” all the time and casting judgment which prevented her from expressing the full essence of her artistic abilities. “Push Me” becomes Marin’s “medicinal message” that every part of herself is unique. It’s more than just about finding that inner glow within ourselves in order to break free of restrictions placed on us in society, “Push Me’s” energy is self-empowering, rebellious, and energetic. Marin delivers a glimmering, burning sensation for her listeners.
“Push Me” is the latest glimpse from Marin’s forthcoming 2022 summer album that lets listeners take a dive into the songstress’ world of quirkiness, empowerment, and inner resilience. Listeners can expect tracks that voice Marin’s private battles, bittersweet tales, and her innermost thoughts that led her to transform through her songwriting.
[UNPUBLISHED]: Our readers would love to get to know you and your music more. Can you tell us about what type of music you create and how you first got started in the industry?
[CASSIE]: I officially started producing and writing songs when I was 15. I got into composing at seven, so it was a little different. It was all piano-based and I was classically trained on the piano. For a while, I was just really focused on classical music. I thought I wanted to go to Julliard, but around age 12 or 13 I started writing lyrics to the compositions and I was like, maybe songwriting is something that is pulling out my heart more than I realized. I just started focusing on music. Then after going through a gymnastics accident, I was actually focused on being a gymnast when I was in my earlier teens and music just took over it. I obviously went through a little bit of depression and sadness after going through a gymnastics incident and not being able to continue, but music kind of came in and swooped in and saved me and became this outlet that I could put all that disappointment into.
[UNPUBLISHED]: What artists inspire you either lyrically or instrumentally?
[CASSIE]: I listen to a lot of very different kinds of music. So I'll go from listening to a little bit of Doja Cat to Circa Survive. So it's a little all over the place, but lyrically I definitely have a lot of inspiration from Circa Survive, Corbin, Tame Impala, and Frank Sinatra.
[UNPUBLISHED]: Your newest single “Push Me” just released. Can you talk to me about the inspiration behind the song and how the creative process looked like for you writing it?
[CASSIE]: “Push Me,” I actually wrote in the middle of 2020 right after everything shut down and I was sort of beginning to understand that I wasn't going to have sessions with any of my friends who are producers or other producers for a while. I just had an angsty evening where I sat down at my desk and I just dove into this electronic pop production which is not usually like my normal approach. I was moody and I sat at my desk and 25 minutes later, the whole track was just laid out and then I freestyled over it for about 15 minutes and then I just left it alone. I listened to it two days later and it felt empowering.
[UNPUBLISHED]: What do you hope your listeners can take away from “Push Me?”[CASSIE]: “Push Me” is definitely all about self-empowerment and just finding that self-love and push inside of yourself to want to go and pursue your dreams without approval from anyone needing anyone to tell you they're proud of you and that song is all about if you love something, go and do it because it's worth it.
[UNPUBLISHED]: You said when creating “Push Me,” you are in a headspace of feeling as if the outside world was telling you no all the time. Can you talk to me about how you broke out of that mindset and does songwriting help with breaking out that mindset?
[CASSIE]: I think so. Personally, songwriting definitely allows me to sort of reflect on my feelings and pay more attention to them. So after writing “Push Me,” I sort of found a self-power that I didn't feel for a long time. I was sort of waiting for approval from others or waiting for my friends’ approval. We all have friends and sometimes we have expectations of them that we shouldn't, so I just kind of grew up a little bit after writing that song.
[UNPUBLISHED]: How is “Push Me” different from your other single releases such as “Busy Body” and “Every Time I See the Ocean?”
[CASSIE]: “Push Me” is different in a way that I produced the track all myself before taking it to my engineer buddy Devin Corey. He mixes and also helps me finish the production style for some of my songs. I think that “Push Me” has a little bit of weird solo Cassie energy that comes out every once in a while.
[UNPUBLISHED]: If you could describe “Push Me” in three words, which would you use?
[CASSIE]: Self-empowering, rebellious and energetic.
[UNPUBLISHED]: I saw that you have over 16k+ followers and you're still growing on Spotify, and with the recent release of “Push Me” it has amassed over 20k+ streams. Were you ever expecting such a huge response and following from fans so early on in your career?
[CASSIE]: I honestly do everything sort of without expectations. It's like me learning about myself when I make music and then release it and then share those emotions with the world and see how many people relate.
[UNPUBLISHED]: What can we expect from you in the near future?
[CASSIE]: My album comes out this summer! I’m really excited to share it and fans can expect a 15-20 track album, it’s very long.
[UNPUBLISHED]: Did you face any anxiety around releasing your album?
[CASSIE]: Totally. I've never worked on a project for so long and I've worked on this album for about three years, so definitely listening to something that you made three years ago it's like I'm not this person anymore. It is important to honor those feelings and share them even though you might feel like you're over them.
[UNPUBLISHED]: Do you have any advice for upcoming artists who are just breaking into the industry?
[CASSIE]: Don't have expectations and just keep doing it [songwriting and producing]. Everyone's journey is so different and some people might see another person's journey and feel discouraged. Just focus on what you're doing and keep writing from your heart.
[UNPUBLISHED]: My last question for you is what is your wildest dream as an artist if you can have one thing happen to you, a milestone or collaboration you want accomplished in your career? What would that look like for you?
[CASSIE]: A collaboration with Skrillex.
