Misconceptions of Astrology

What is the purpose of astrology? This is a question that can be debated upon by several perspectives, which brings us to the conclusion that the purpose of astrology varies depending on each individual and each individual’s desired use of astrology. However, at astrology’s core, the intention, or purpose, should be predominantly focused on understanding oneself and the world around oneself. Astrology is a tool that allows individuals to introspect on themselves and how their behaviors correspond with others. Perhaps, astrology is one of the first ways an individual begins their self-growth journey as they reflect on the correlation between their childhood and the house their moon sign falls under. It gives insight into the areas in which one should work towards healing from and areas in which one should continue to nourish.

Overall, astrology is meant to be used to enhance one’s experience with oneself, which inevitably will also allow one to respond to the world more positively. Responding to the world more positively, such as understanding where one fits into the world comfortably, will also allow connections with people to benefit. However, astrology is not always used as this positive interpretive tool, and at times, it can be used to divide one another and oneself.

We see this divide with the misconceptions of astrology. Firstly, the notion that individuals have to dislike an entire sign and every individual within that sign is a notion that is based on incorrect assumptions about astrology. For example, suppose you are scrolling through social media apps. In that case, you may have stumbled across Tiktok interview videos, in which an interviewer asks individuals on the street what astrology signs they dislike. Many times, if one of these individuals has a sign they dislike, they will mention a sign that they had a personal experience with. These personal experiences tend to stem from one individual, and therefore the unhealthy dynamic with that individual translates into how one would view an entire sign.

Now, we all have personal experiences with individuals of different signs. We may have a best friend that’s an eccentric Aquarius that we can explore conspiracy theories with until sunrise. Instead, other experiences with Aquarius individuals may feel like they are detached in their personal world in which you may feel excluded. Whatever your experience with an Aquarius individual or multiple Aquarius individuals has been, it will most likely affect your viewpoint on the sign. A negative experience will result in negative opinions. And while sometimes there can be humor to this, this divide in disliking signs, makes astrology a tool that can be divisive when the purpose should be focused on unity.

Firstly, when interacting with one another, it is important to understand we are not all just one sign. Every individual has a birth chart with multiple signs and placements. This means that if you dislike an Aquarius Sun, you might have an Aquarius placement in another area of your chart, which makes disliking the entire sign of Aquarius more difficult. Secondly, the reason you associate particular behavior with a sign may be because you aren’t looking at an individual’s entire chart, and recognizing that that behavior may be associated with a different aspect of their chart. That individual may also be an underdeveloped individual of that particular sign.

Lastly, in astrology, when one dislikes another individual, it may be because that individual reminds them of areas in their life in which they need to grow or learn from. If you dislike an individual with many Leo placements, you may need to learn how to put yourself first, rather than viewing individuals who do this as inherently selfish.

In astrology, many times we can all fall into pop culture astrology. This is prevalent when we see one notion of a sign being represented everywhere, such as the narrative that Gemini’s are two-faced. Gemini individuals tend to have strong personalities that deviate because of their

complexity rather than become of their malicious intent, especially if these individuals are developed individuals. When we only focus on negative qualities or finding signs to dislike, we stray away from the purpose of astrology, which is rooted in personal development and understanding others through a multi-layered lens.

Even when analyzing one’s negative qualities, it is imperative that one analyzes these qualities through a lens of possible growth. It shouldn’t be a stagnant place in which one internalizes the negative perceptions of signs and accepts this.

All in all, as human beings, we are able to blossom into our imaginations, and it is important that we work together and appreciate our differences rather than divide ourselves based on baseless misconceptions and one-sided perspectives.
