An Ode to Twitter

Hot take on a highly-debated topic: Twitter is the BEST social media platform. Instagram is wonky and is constantly down, Facebook is… well, Facebook (founded by Mark Zuckerberg, enough said), and TikTok is just a new version of Vine (I love it, but sometimes it gets old). However, Twitter is elite. 280 characters of pure humor? Where people can post any out-of-pocket statements they want? How can you beat that!

Twitter, how I love you.

You make me cry-laugh and witch-cackle in public spaces, and people give me weird looks because of it.

You bring me constant frustration and endless joy.

In the last year, I’ve gained a new appreciation for you.

I’ve had a Twitter account since I was about thirteen (I know, terrifying that I had an account then). But I can’t say I ever really appreciated it until this past year. Not only does it happen to be the funniest social media platform, but it also happens to be a short and sweet way of keeping up with the news. I can get lost in Twitter threads for hours, scrolling through content and falling down chains and threads until I don’t know what’s real and what isn’t. I think that it has become the preferred app of our generation (along with TikTok, of course). With a personalized Trending news page that takes into account who and what topics I like to follow, the news that comes up on my feed is organized just for me. The trending page allows me to easily see what news is making headlines without having to sift through too much content. Through Twitter, it’s always easy to gauge public opinion on matters.

The new update where you can follow topics and lists in addition to people is also great and unlike any other writing-based social media app. Some of the topics and lists I follow include Broadway, antiques, art, Adele, books, cats, college life, comedy, libra, movies, and tv, music festivals, Stevie Nicks, tattoos, Taylor Swift, unsolved mysteries, and more. Following these topics further personalizes my feed and trending topics, therefore individualizing my news feed,  allowing me to see content specifically for me. The amount of cats (specifically Bodega cats) on my feed is just incredible. And, we can’t forget how many hilarious memes/trends that have started on Twitter.

One of my top favorite Twitter moments was when the beef between Jacob Sartorius and Bhad Bhabie started in 2017. The enemies-to-lovers pair had an epic Twitter spat that left people dying laughing and wanting more. I’m still waiting in anticipation for a collaboration between two of the most controversial young artists. Some of my other favorite Twitter moments include the memes of Kanye West and Jeffree Star (after the rumor that he cheated on Kim Kardashian), the memes about Grimes and Elon Musks’ son’s name, the celebrity-bathing debate, the Met Gala outfit tweets, and any tweets about Taylor Swift. All of the tweets about the John Mulaney, Olivia Munn, and Annamarie Tendler situation were outrageously funny, and I also loved the tweets that came out after the Meghan Markle and Prince Harry interview with Oprah and Hayes Grier’s arrest. There are too many amazing Twitter moments to account for, but I think you see my point.

Some amazingly funny and niche Twitter accounts to follow include Hilarious accounts that I follow and you should too! Scary Godmother, MD @jenny2x4, She Rates Dogs @SheRatesDogs, so sad today @sosadtoday, dj fuck @eggshellfriend,  dudes who are down bad @downbadpatrol__, and giabuchi (incensed italixn) @jaboukie.

Follow me on Twitter

Twitter, you will always be my favorite. I scroll through tweets when I wake up, and when I’m going to bed, and I don’t know how I’d live my life without the hilarious, strange content that’s on Twitter. I think gaining an appreciation for Twitter is a part of growing up, and I’m here for it. Get off of Instagram and Facebook and give Twitter a chance, I guarantee you won’t regret it.
