My Love Language: Making Spotify Playlists

Everyone’s heard of the five major love languages: words of affirmation, acts of service, gifts, quality time, and physical touch. But what about making Spotify playlists? This unique and heartfelt gesture serves as the ideal way of connecting with others through music. Taking the time to curate the perfect assortment of songs not only demonstrates your dedication but also your creativity; therefore, making Spotify playlists is my go-to love language.     

Contrary to popular belief, making Spotify playlists is a serious art. It requires the correct combination of the music you like and the music you think your partner might like. The end product should be a musical masterpiece capturing the essence of your relationship. To truly embellish your playlist, adding a clever title, aesthetic cover image, and witty description really ties everything together. This playlist isn’t just a playlist for partying or sleeping or driving; it’s a personalized playlist made specifically for your partner. 

This love language is most effective when your intentions are detailed and heartfelt. Anybody can throw together a few of overplayed cliche love songs, title the playlist “To My love,” and slap a heart on the cover. You want your playlist to tell a story. There should be a reason behind your song selection for the playlist. Maybe a certain song connects with a memory. Maybe a certain song references an inside joke. Maybe a certain song puts your unspoken feelings into words. Whatever it may be, each song must serve a purpose in the playlist and have a personal meaning behind it.   

While some may say my playlist-making process is too tedious, I believe that creating a good playlist demands a good amount of effort. A good playlist consists of a diverse mixture of songs: some fast and some slow, some from one genre and some from another, some that symbolize you and some that symbolize your partner. Yet, taking inspiration from your favorite memories and moments helps with this challenge. Instead of focusing on the pressure to make the perfect playlist, focus on the desire to create something meaningful for your partner.  

Sometimes, I think people take this gesture for granted. I spend hours or even days making Spotify playlists. In a way, it allows me to reflect on where the relationship started and where I hope it will go. Selecting the music for the playlist, song by song, reminds me to slow down and reminisce upon the reasons why I love my partner. Like I mentioned before, a Spotify playlist must tell a story.

Nothing compares to the feeling of sharing a playlist that you know your partner will genuinely cherish. I mean how can you not swoon after someone sends you a two to three hour personalized playlist consisting of a carefully curated selection of their favorite songs for you? 

Perhaps some would consider making Spotify playlists an unconventional love language, I, however, think it’s an expression of love that often goes overlooked. The significance behind each song is what makes it so special. It’s the intricate process of arranging all these songs into one big beautiful mosaic of music. In a way, I feel like making someone a Spotify playlist a tender representation of modern romance. Just like words of affirmation, acts of service, gifts, quality time, and physical touch, making Spotify playlists allows us to communicate how much we care for another human being. 

This tenderness is hidden in each song, each lyric, each note. Love lingers in Spotify playlists. You just need to know where to look.
