10 Film Recommendations for the Gemini and Taurus Seasons
Taurus
Dear Taurus, I may not know many of you, but it is well known that you are some of the coolest creatures on this planet. Many of you might not be aware of your ability to give advice, think outside the box, and find new ways of laziness… but I have also heard that you can be dependent, stubborn, and materialistic at times. There’s nothing wrong with that - you just need to watch these films.
Frances Ha
“I'm so embarrassed. I'm not a real person yet.”
Directed by: Noah Baumbach
Don’t be fooled by the grayscale - the characters bring a lot of color to this film. The story is about Frances, portrayed by Greta Gerwig, who tries to achieve her dream of a dancing career, living in a New York apartment with her best friend Sophie, portrayed by Mickey Summer. If you know anything about the city, it’s that things are constantly changing; your friends, expectations from other people, and life in general. Taurus signs can be afraid of change, looking at the world as a place to receive everything, instead of a challenge to take on. This is one of those movies where you walk out of the theater, (or perhaps your living room), feeling like a brand new person, ready to take on obstacles.
Bottle Rocket
“But I don’t think that your happiness is quite appropriate.”
Directed by: Wes Anderson
Watching Wes Anderson films is like watching a big pile of mess being covered with a beautiful handkerchief; everything is chaotic at the start, but the situation soon starts to pull itself together through the power of family, youth, and love. Bottle Rocket has everything to do with loyalty. In the opening scene, Dignan, portrayed by Owen Wilson, is breaking his friend, Anthony, portrayed by Luke Wilson, out of a mental hospital, (even though it is a voluntary establishment). The two call up their neighbor, Bob, to help them perform a series of unlawful actions. There are obvious Taurus traits in both of the friends; Dignan is determined, while Anthony is loyal.
Cleo from 5 to 7
“You seem to be waiting for something, rather than someone.”
Directed by: Agnes Varda
This Left Bank French New Wave film has a lot to do with the seemingly negative attributes of the Taurus sign. Cleo, portrayed by Corrine Marchand, starts off as a self-indulgent, dependent, bourgeois pop singer, who is convinced by a Tarot reader that her death is near. In the time frame of two hours, we see Cleo roaming Paris, looking for people to help her with her own problems, and finding a stranger in the park to comfort her. Taurus signs should find this film as a signal to reflect on the way you treat people, as well as how you want others to see you.
Minding The Gap
“You don't grow up thinking that's the way you are.”
Directed by: Bing Liu
Minding The Gap is a documentary film about family and friendship in the skateboarding community. While watching this film, you are essentially growing up with the three boys depicted; seeing what they’ve been through in the past, how they continue to bond as friends as the years pass by, and when skateboarding is no longer a necessity for coping with their environmental and parental struggles. From what I know, Taurus signs take their friendships and family very seriously, making them one of the most loyal signs out there.
Gemini
When searching for Gemini-like films, there were a couple of specific adjectives I had in mind, to filter through some of my most highly-rated flicks. I looked for characters who are indecisive, witty, and/or daring, along with their environments being entertaining and alarming. Geminis are probably the most despised signs for their infamous two-faced stereotype, so that’s not what we’re doing here.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
“Too weird to live, too rare to die!”
Directed by: Terry Gillian
As a Gemini, I just had to include one of my absolute favorite films of all time. Adapted from Hunter S. Thompson’s novel, Raoul Duke goes to Las Vegas with his attorney and a suitcase full of almost every type of drug known to existence, searching for the “American Dream”. Duke’s character is brimming with color and curiosity, becoming his own observer while traveling throughout the mind of narcotics. Whether it’s the colors, dialogue, or the outrageous activities which he embarks on, being bored is not an option while watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Any Gemini would watch this movie and have an existential crisis… but in a cool and fun kind of way.
Dreams
“Human beings are such idiots.”
Directed by: Akira Kurosawa
This film is a series of short films, perfect for a Gemini that gets bored quickly. Watching Dreams is like looking at your own dreams, and a couple of sensations this film might conjure are: confusion, connectedness, and openness to possibilities. I advise you to watch this film and indulge yourself, treat it like your own dreams, and find connection to your personal life - it could bring more clarity to a mental situation you might be experiencing.
Waking Life
“On really romantic evenings of self, I go salsa dancing with my confusion”
Directed By: Richard Linklater
I owe you five bucks if this movie doesn’t change the way you perceive the world. In this film, the filmmaker brings rotoscoping - an animation technique that copies real life movement, to intrigue the viewers to its openness to our own reality - and if you aren’t hooked by the first few seconds of the film, you won’t be for the entire running time. This story is essentially giving observations of our world and how conscious we are in it, juxtaposing a dream-like perception with real life conversations; quintessential for a witty Gemini with an open-mind.
She’s Gotta Have It
“I'm not a one-man woman. Bottom line.”
Directed By: Spike Lee
Indecisiveness is one of the worst quirks a Gemini can possess, often getting in the way of our great leadership potential and relationships. In She’s Gotta Have It, Nola Darling, portrayed by Tracy Camilla Johns, dates three men at the same time because she can’t quite pick the one she’s meant to be with. This film is set in Brooklyn, New York, a community overflowing with amazing black creatives and personalities. A Gemini should watch this and reflect on the ways these characters treat those who admire them, because we often see these people as an option, instead of an opportunity for mutualism.
BOTH
You’ve seen the Taurus-like movies and you’ve seen the Gemini-like movies, now, what happens when you combine the two? You get an unpredictable film with characters that rely on others to help them overcome the curiosity of a certain aspect in their life. The last two film recommendations are movies that would be a perfect fit for a Taurus and Gemini!
The Dreamers
“I could hear my heart pounding. I don't know if it was because I'd just been chased by the police or because I was already in love with my new friends.”
Directed by: Bernado Bertolucci
Based on Gilbert Adair’s book, The Holy Innocents, Matthew, portrayed by Michael Pitt, is an American exchange student living in France during the midst of youth protests and rioting. He comes across two siblings through their shared love of cinema, the brother is Theo, portrayed by Louis Garrel, and his sister Isabelle, portrayed by Eva Green. The two siblings have an eccentric relationship, but all together, their bond is very special. The siblings are determined to make their new friend “one of them”, but Matthew is indecisive on whether or not he wants to be a part of their close relationship. There’s a bit of controversy on this film but above all that, the picture is alluring, mimicking many shots of classic cinema.
Fallen Angels
“There are some people you can never get close to. Get too close, and you’ll find him boring.”
Directed by: Wong Kar-Wai
Fallen Angels bundles the genres of Crime, Romance, Drama, and Comedy perfectly. The story follows five people in Hong Kong, many of whom have intriguing career paths, including a hitman’s assistant and a mute entrepreneur. This is one of those films that is best watched without much context at all, you just need to put your trust into Wong Kar-Wai’s aesthetically pleasing images. Fallen Angels covers an abundance of Taurus and Gemini characteristics, as well as being an inspiring piece for many storytellers… So, watch it.
I highly encourage you to watch these films whilst alone, to give yourself a source of introspection - or at least that’s how I enjoy movies. Feel free to take the time to see how you are portrayed in relation to your zodiac sign; how you either want to be different from that or follow expectations, since films are just our filtered versions of reality. If you're a Taurus or Gemini reading this, live up your season and stay healthy!
