Dennis Dizon: In Process
As a 22-year-old about to enter the real world, musician Dennis Dizon balances entering adulthood and the music industry simultaneously. Dizon is a musical theater BFA student at Emerson College set to graduate this spring. But on top of his degree, he is attempting to finish his first EP. With no background in music production, Dizon has taken on this project to kickstart a dream he’s always had.
Dizon’s apartment matches his spirit: effortless and ethereal. The walls are full of original pieces of art, windowsills adorned with lush plants, and unique knick knacks are neatly placed in every open space. This charming space radiates the same breath of warmth and ease that Dizon has.
As the college chapter of his life is coming to a close, Dizon notes the combined anxiety and excitement he has towards the future. To him, “having a roadmap of what [he] wants to do and who [he] wants to become” is integral in beginning the next chapter.
Beginning his songwriting journey at 13, Dizon uses the craft as an outlet to express his thoughts and emotions that would otherwise “forever be locked in [his] head.” His songs translate a sense of intimacy and honesty that people crave, which comes from his overall outlook on making music. When first contemplating releasing his music, he would “get so caught up in what people [were] gonna say or who they’re going to think [he] is.” At some point, Dizon built up the courage to release his first song and was shocked by the repetitively mundane conversations he had when sharing it with friends and family.
After the release of his first three singles in 2021, he gained perspective, realizing “the stakes are never that high and it's never that serious, I’m just putting out music and my thoughts.”
In discussing the future, defining one’s self as an “artist” or “musician” came up in conversation, and Dizon said something extremely wise.
“I recently discovered that [he] doesn't need to prove that [he is] a musician to anyone else,” Dizon said. “What determines if anyone is a musician is if they like to make music and it makes them happy. There isn’t a glass ceiling that you have to crash through to become a certain type of musician. Whatever this music [he puts] out is going to be [his] music and is going to be what [he] want[s] it to be.”
Keep your eyes peeled for Dizon’s first EP releasing this summer. In the meantime, you can stream his singles here.
