On November 22nd, Boyish rocked The Echo in Los Angeles alongside spill tab and Ethan Tasch. After their set, we got the chance to chat with them in the cozy green room above the stage. We talked about everything from their favorite drunk snacks to what they're looking forward to going into the new year.

[UNPUBLISHED:] How was your experience playing The Echo in Los Angeles?

[BOYISH:] I feel like we're just so nervous to play here because I don't know why the Los Angeles scene feels very limited in comparison to New York. I think we were probably so used to New York and here no one knows who we are and what we're doing here. During the first couple of songs I'm like “Oh my god, nobody knows who we are,” but we were not expecting a turnout like this so it was really, really nice.

[UNPUBLISHED:] What's your inspiration behind your newest EP?

[BOYISH:] I feel like it's still coming together. We have a couple of songs that are just floating around but we're trying to piece it all together in one piece. I feel like it's similar to the last EP, which is just like full existential dread but like slightly more grown-up.

[UNPUBLISHED:] What inspired the sound and the story behind this project?

[BOYISH:] I feel like we've been really inspired by Viva Dooby like her as an artist and her production style. We loved the way she's literally just talking to you through her songs. I feel like that's been a big inspiration. Smithereens was definitely inspired by The Replacements - actually, by “Sweden Party” we were obsessed with that song. Sonically I think like recently we’ve been a lot into shoegaze and the floaty guitar. We’ve also been experimenting with crunchier drums. We're definitely still in the process of fully writing an EP, I think we have like four or five songs done. There's a lot more to figure out  and I think still so much in the process of being made.

[UNPUBLISHED:] What is your general songwriting process like? How do you work together?

[BOYISH:] Crazy, like panic. This EP has been different because we've been trying to write it together. In the past we’ve been like “Oh here's a song I wrote and now it’s like we have an idea together from the beginning.”

[UNPUBLISHED:] Since you guys are trying to collaborate more, do you guys have a specific process?

[BOYISH:] Honestly the most effective way we've had so far is we'll start with a drum loop and like, just play over it until something sticks. Like especially if we're having no ideas at all. I feel like we go through a lot of periods. We’ll have literally no ideas and we think that's like the best starting point.

[UNPUBLISHED:] What are you guys looking forward to within the next year?

[BOYISH:] We are so excited to go on tour with Remo Drive in January. We’ve never done that before. We’ve been waiting for that and it’s been really exciting.

[UNPUBLISHED:] Do you guys have any pre-show rituals?

[BOYISH:] I feel like we usually try and sit somewhere quiet because I get really nervous. I cannot speak beforehand.

[UNPUBLISHED:] Favorite snack?

[BOYISH:] Cheeze It.

[UNPUBLISHED:] Favorite drunk snack?

[BOYISH:] Nachos and chicken fingers.
