Pentire Welcomes Debut EP 'Now In A Minute' Live in Leeds
The Herefordshire four-piece is the sound of Jack Morgan (vocals/guitar), Owen Seymour (guitar), Jacob Beswetherick (bass) and newest member Jake Weaver (drums). With a wrapped up tour across the United Kingdom beginning in Leeds, the band has announced one more surprise for their listeners with the release of their EP Now In A Minute on vinyl available June 10.
First discovering Pentire with their fan-adored singles “Belly Dancer” and “Best Friend’s House” released back in 2020, it was rewarding to experience Pentire exploring more rock-focused beats. Through a trial of different members in and out of the band, whatever it was that brought these four musicians together deserves a round of applause. Seeing Pentire live was like being in a room full of your closest friends. As the band are also students studying at universities in neighboring cities around the United Kingdom, the relationship they created on stage with the crowd and the rustic venue itself felt very down to earth. As Leeds was their first stop on their UK tour, I couldn’t help but to notice how happy they looked up on the stage at Oporto. Although the first show of a debut can always be stressful, where in-ear monitors aren’t working exactly how they should or parts of a song are speeding faster than you hoped, Pentire showed Leeds new stories showcasing their growth as twenty-somethings. If we remember the last time Pentire played a gig in Leeds, they opened for Dublin-based band milk. Although we didn’t get to catch that gig back in February, we can now see Pentire headlining the stage in Leeds almost three months later.
Pentire began a new journey as a band with the release of their first single off the EP, “Spinning.” The opening track of the record stood out immensely on the Oporto stage in Leeds with the audience singing along with Jack, highlighting the headaches that one endures during moments of falling in and out of love. As a new drummer was officially initiated into the band a day before the Leeds gig, Jake Weaver’s impressive percussion skills kept the band rhythmically in check.
“Give Me a Reason” has one of the best instrumental backing tracks on the EP. With Jacob’s bass lines driving the track forward, in accompaniment with Jack’s strong vocals, it’s not incredibly common where the instruments themselves make you feel the effects of the lyrics more. After listening to the track a few times before seeing the band perform live, I was wondering if the bass line would deliver the same feeling as it did through the recording – and as I always like to say, bass lines are better live.
If I could only show a friend one of Pentire’s songs from this EP it would be “Kick Me When I’m Weak.” The storyline, instrumentals, energy, and the production combined is why I consider it to be one of the strongest tracks off the new record. Pentire is a band making music for the best of both worlds. With energetic songs such as “Kick Me When I’m Weak” that have the crowd completely swept off their feet, they are capable of switching the vibe to a slower mood enhanced by songs like “Can I Drive.” Through balancing tones of rock-enthused guitar riffs from Owen, and echoes of melancholy acoustic melodies from Jack, Pentire had the crowd engaged through every moment of their set.
The short but sweet EP includes a Welsh-infused title brought into the band by Wales-born guitarist Owen. The tracklist of “Now In A Minute” includes:
1 - Spinning
2 - Give Me A Reason
3 - Can I Drive
4 - Kick Me When I’m Weak
5 - How Would Someone Else Do It
6 - How Have You Been Sleeping
If you didn’t get a chance to check out the up-and-coming indie band during their UK tour, there’s plenty more opportunities to see them rock the EP live in Oxfordshire at Truck Festival from July 21-23. If you’re looking to branch into the world of Britain’s emerging indie-rock world but don’t know exactly where to start, we recommend giving Pentire a listen.
