Pop Powerhouse GALE is Blunt and Unapologetic in Her Confessionals

We all have that one song that reminds us of our ex. Puerto Rican powerhouse singer and songwriter GALE releases “Nuestra Canción,”an intimate track that presents an electric beat to dance your heart out, highlighting GALE’s signature Latin pop sensibilities. GALE says it’s the type of song you cry to on the dancefloor. Immersed by captivating storytelling and cathartic electronic breakdown, GALE’s talent for strong song composition shines on her unique ability to transcribe her personal stories and emotions into dreamy melodies and charming lyricism.

GALE channels a reborn, edgy angel in “Nuestra Canción’s” accompanying music video. The songstress emerges from a tub of water and conveys a full range of emotions.

“I love this music video. It’s very artistic, metaphoric, colorful yet dark, with beautiful outfits and I also have an amazing girl gang,” GALE says. “It’s directed by the great TeoGraph, who directed the music videos for “Inmadura,” “Problemas” and “D PIC.” In terms of the look and feel of this video, I was inspired by the 1996 movie “Romeo + Juliet” and by the Madonna era “Like a Prayer.”

“Nuestra Canción” portrays GALE’s signature sound and relatability mixed in with her knack for deeply honest lyrics. Speaking on the inspiration behind the single she says, “We all have that song that reminds you of your ex. That song that takes you back to the happy moments you shared together. My new single ‘Nuestra Canción’ is about letting go, about finally accepting that the relationship is over and instead of crying alone at home, you go out dancing and face that song that was yours and that person’s.”

Esta vida es muy corta pa’ llorar por cualquiera” which translates to “This life is too short to waste your tears on someone that’s not worth it,” is a direct scram from the top of GALE’s lungs in “Nuestra Canción” and is the heart of where the songstress’ music lies, evoking a sense of charm and fierce feminine energy. GALE’s work transcends the contemporary limit of pop and electronica as her experimental content and intense emotional experiences are channeled in her music.

The latest release follows GALE’s “D PIC” is a powerful pop-rock anthem that touches on receiving unsolicited sexts from men. Her sharp lyricism and blunt, unapologetic confessionals further push her versatility. The underlying message behind the single is consent as it models the songstress’ personal experiences with the subject as it affects many women around her.

[UNPUBLISHED]: Thank you for sitting down and talking to Unpublished Magazine. For readers who would love to get to know you and your music better, can you describe your music and creative inspiration behind it?

[GALE]: Thank you so much for having me! Not to compare myself to any artist, but just so people can get a better idea: my music is like a mix of Bad Bunny, Dua Lipa and Avril Lavigne. It’s definitely pop, with a bit of rock and urban conversational lyrics and melodies, always in touch with my Puerto Rican roots. I consider myself a very connected person. I find inspiration in film, fashion, people, life itself and definitely my own experiences.

[UNPUBLISHED]: Tell us about your new single "Nuestra Canción” and what the inspiration behind the single was?

[GALE]: We all have that song that reminds you of your ex. That song that takes you back to the happy moments you shared together. “Nuestra Canción” (which translates to “Our Song”) is about finally letting go, and understanding that the only way to get over someone is to go through it. I love this song. It’s empowering and perfect to dance your heart out.

[UNPUBLISHED]: "Nuestra Canción” has an accompanying music video. What was the inspiration behind the video and what was your experience filming the video?

[GALE]: I love this music video. It’s very artistic, metaphoric, colorful yet dark, with beautiful outfits and I also have another amazing girl gang (like in my previous video for my song 'D PIC'). I was inspired by the “Romeo + Juliet” film in 1996, and by Madonna's “Like a Prayer” era. Shooting it was so much fun. One of my favorite scenes is the altar moment. I love the drama in that particular scene. I can’t wait for everyone to see it! It’s directed by the amazing TeoGraph, who also directed the music videos for my songs “Inmadura,” “Problemas” and “D PIC.”

[UNPUBLISHED]: What is your creative process like for writing music? What message, emotions or story do you hope to portray with your music?

[GALE]: When I get in the studio, I love imagining that I’m opening a portal to vulnerability. I always like staying true to myself, my feelings and how I wanna express whatever it is that I’m feeling. It’s normal for me to feel that uncertainty in your gut. Usually, that’s when I know I’m taking the correct route in terms of creativity and being honest with myself. I love this process, it’s always different and I never take it for granted.

[UNPUBLISHED]: Your last single “D Pic” was released and it touches on the epidemic of men sending unsolicited pictures of themselves. It has a brutally honest energy to it. What was the inspiration behind the song?

[GALE]: I love this song and it has such an important message: consent. When I got to the studio, I had this feeling in my throat because it’s something that’s been happening to me, my friends, and people all over the world, so the song basically wrote itself. We wrote it in like 20 minutes! The lyrics are honest and straightforward. I’ve never heard a song about this matter, and I was like, “I need to write this, enough is enough!” In terms of music and production, it is a powerful pop-rock song.

[UNPUBLISHED]: What is your favorite lyric that stands out to you the most? Is there a specific message or lyric that draws you in the most?

[GALE]: If I had to choose from my songs, I’d say: “Esta vida es muy corta pa’ llorar por cualquiera” which translates to “This life is too short to waste your tears on someone that’s not worth it.” It's a lyric to my new single “Nuestra Canción,” it’s empowering and I definitely scream that line at the top of my lungs when it gets to the second verse.

[UNPUBLISHED]: What inspires your artistic persona and style?

[GALE]: Art, movies, fashion, books, nature, therapy, poetry, people and LIFE.

[UNPUBLISHED]: How are you feeling in this current era of your career and what does the rest of the year look like for you that you would love to share with Unpublished?

[GALE]: I feel very grateful for this moment. I can say I’m living my dream, and even though I’m just “starting out” (after years of training, studying music and writing songs), I’m doing my best to enjoy every second of this crazy journey. I’m blessed to have the team I have by my side, and I just can’t wait to keep connecting with people through my music. I’ll be performing at the Empire Music Festival in Guatemala, and I’m very excited about it! I’m also working on the last touches of my album. That excites me the most! More on that soon.
