PVRIS Confronts Modern Culture with The Release of Their New Album ‘EVERGREEN’
PVRIS debuted their highly anticipated fourth album, EVERGREEN, on July 14th. The mastermind behind this innovative and beautifully crafted 11-track album is Lyndsey Gunnulfsen, who has been transparent with her musical approach for this album being different from past projects.
The album starts off with "I DON'T WANNA DO THIS ANYMORE" a bold and captivating first track that sets the tone for the album and serves as a strong statement of Lynn’s creative agenda for reclaiming her independent and artistic vision amongst our society’s obsession with trends and social media. Listeners are greeted with Lynn’s powerful vocals that show listeners just how much control she has in her voice to speed up the song but also slow it down from the verses to the chorus. The song includes layered synths throughout along with a catchy drop from the pre-chorus to the chorus, including the repetition of "I Don’t Wanna Do This Anymore," which reinforces Lynn’s desire to break free from the pressure of conformity in today’s society. Which makes this the perfect introduction to what the rest of the album has in store.
Keeping the tempo, the next song in the album is "GOOD ENEMY" which was an early release for the album and perfectly complements the bold and fresh energy manifested throughout. Bringing the electric pop sound, this song is one to keep your head bopping and appreciating the mix of layered sounds, dynamic vocals, and rich guitar riffs, which is iconic to PVRIS’ mix.
Transitioning into a personal favorite of mine, "GODDESS" is another early release for the album that consistently played on repeat in my head for weeks. The catchy guitar riff and a sassy, sarcastic laugh from Lynn instantly caught my attention. While capturing Lynn’s creative take on her music, this song provides listeners with a strong message of women empowerment and the bold attitude that comes with that. As someone who loves that energy, I am looking forward to screaming the lyrics, "Is she a wo- or a man? I'm a motherf*cking brand" live in concert.
The build of energy in the previous tracks prepared listeners for the next two songs in the album, both "ANIMAL" and "HYPE ZOMBIES" are dark and full of rage, both instrumentally and lyrically. Lynn fearlessly channels her emotions throughout and unapologetically does not hold back on her expression of feminine rage and power. The songs "ANIMAL" and "HYPE ZOMBIES'' lyrically dive into a brutal declaration of Lynn’s feelings towards being controlled. Musically, both songs juxtapose perfectly with the dark, grungy sound and Lynn’s melodic vocals, which come together to captivate listeners. Also, I will speak on behalf of listeners and say that we want an extended version of "HYPE ZOMBIES.”
Reaching halfway through the album, there is a noticeable shift in sound for the next track, "TAKE MY NIRVANA.” While keeping the same aggression and self-assurance, Lynn adds a softer pop touch into the mix. The intensity of the sound is blended flawlessly with Lynn’s intense vocals, which leave listeners wanting to sing along with the same angst. I can totally see this song being used in a badass superhero movie.
"SENTI-MENTAL" is the cherry on top for this album. It is perfect in its own way, and it totally switches the tone of the album from angst to acceptance and self-assurance. From the vibrant tempo of the drums to the lively piano riff that intertwines perfectly with Lynn’s vocals, this is the song listeners are going to want to dance around in a field of flowers. Also, an honorable mention goes to the groovy guitar riff that truly captures the range PVRIS brings to EVERGREEN.
Adding to your late-night car ride playlist, "ANYWHERE BUT HERE" and "HEADLIGHTS" are two songs that can best be described as a warm embrace. The isolated instrumentals and vocals throughout capture listeners' attention with Lynn’s mesmerizing allure and introspective lyrics to share her desire to find solace away from her current circumstances.
Closing out the album are the last two tracks, "LOVE IS A" and the title track "EVERGREEN.” These both bring back the pop electric tempo heard in the first few tracks which wrap up the album seamlessly. I appreciate the poetic lyricism through "LOVE IS A" which is complemented well by a groovy bass line along with PVRIS’ iconic harp melody found throughout their White Noise album. Concluding the album, EVERGREEN strengthens the overall message behind the work, enhanced by a bouncy drop and playful synths.
After listening to the EVERGREEN album in full, it is truly a work of art; the depth and preciseness of this work are to be applauded. Lynn gave us the album of the year, and this is your sign to go listen to it now!
