You Said Forever.
At the age of 17-years old, Olivia Rodrigo debuted her hit song Drivers License and fully impacted the music industry for the better. Rodrigo released this song at the beginning of last month and it stayed No. 1 on the Billboard charts for six straight weeks. Some may know her from Disney’s show Bizaardvark or High School Musical The Musical The Series, but now the whole world knows her. Her heart wrenching and extremely well-written song was an immediate sensation, ruling the charts, breaking Spotify records, and more. Everything about the song was absolutely phenomenal, the lyrics were hard hitting, the bridge was breathtaking, and to tie it all together, the music video was directed beautifully.
Heartbreak: The common theme in this song and the emotions Rodrigo invoked in her audience with this song. Listening to this song is like reliving every bad relationship and every bad breakup one has gone through. Even if you haven’t been in a relationship before, Drivers License just invokes something that makes you feel like you did. Just by that, you can understand how talented Olivia Rodrigo has. She has people crying over a break up they never had. But, essentially, heartbreak is an emotion every person has felt. More specifically, this song applies to a heartbreak over a relationship but, this could apply to friendships, because no matter what, people need people. We find ourselves attaching to others in friendships and romantic relationships. It is a universal experience to absolutely fall in love with someone, platonically and romantically, and get our hearts broken by them. It’s a pain that sadly every person in this universe has felt, which is why Driver’s License is such a hit. Rodrigo expresses this common emotion that relates so heavily to everyone as everyone has felt some sort of heartbreak. Sure, it may hit deeper for others, but on a surface level, everyone understands the emotions Rodrigo is expressing in her song, which is why it is so beautiful of a song.
Everything about this song you can feel. Besides the emotional lyrics, the way Rodrigo sings with so much passion and emotions shows how much this song truly means to her. At 17 years old, her life has changed. Olivia Rodrigo inspired me to create this photography piece, in hope to invoke the same emotions she expressed in her song. Inspired by both the music video as well as her lyrics to capture this heartbreak of emotions.
