Pulling Teeth With Indie Pop Singer Alix Page
[UNPUBLISHED:] What was your creative process behind your song “Pulling Teeth?”
[ALIX PAGE:] I wrote it pretty quickly. I’d had the title in my notes for a while and really wanted to do something with it because the concept felt really inspiring to me in terms of the possibilities for visuals and stuff. Once I’d finished it I sent it to Mark, who produced it! Most of it was made over zoom which is crazy looking back.
[UNPUBLISHED:] I’m obsessed with the cover, what was the inspiration behind it?
[ALIX PAGE:] My friend Tanner, who shot the photos and designed the cover, sent me the cover of the book Informes by Peter Weiss and I fell in love. I knew I wanted something more intense and graphic than my last cover art to go with the concept of pulling teeth. We had a lot of fun playing with different poses and props for it.
[UNPUBLISHED:] This is a funny one but have you ever gotten your teeth pulled?
[ALIX PAGE:] Weirdly - several. I had to get a lot of baby teeth pulled as a kid so I could get braces as early as possible, and I remember they took out four in one day once. I got my wisdom teeth out in high school too. For some reason I watched National Treasure like four times that week.
[UNPUBLISHED:] I heard you’re going on tour with Ella Jane, which is amazing! What are you most excited about when it comes to the tour?
[ALIX PAGE:] Being reunited with fans, visiting the Pacific northwest during fall, and playing new songs :) Selfishly I’m also excited for the drives because I can get a lot of reading done, which I usually don’t find a ton of time for otherwise.
[UNPUBLISHED:] Any places you’re excited to visit?
[ALIX PAGE:] Definitely Seattle and San Francisco, those were two of my favorite stops on tour earlier this year. Both crowds were so lively and fun.
[UNPUBLISHED:] What makes you feel at home when you’re away on tour?
[ALIX PAGE:] Doing my skin care routine and wearing my favorite go-to clothing items. I’ve learned that no matter how many cool outfits I pack and try to plan out when I’m traveling I always end up going back to my basics and half my suitcase goes unworn hahaha. It’s partially a practical thing and partially a comfort thing. Having people you love around you really helps too.
[UNPUBLISHED:] How do you think you’ve evolved as an artist?
[ALIX PAGE:] I think my perspective on writing about people has changed. I used to have this weight on my shoulders feeling like I had these secret, hugely confessional letters to people and would always question whether or not that person “deserved” that song or whether or not I should be writing about them and what all of it means. Now I see it more as just preserving memories and moments that meant a lot to me. It’s freed me up a lot; it feels like the stakes are lower. It’s also made me more confident. I can sing songs with my chest and stand by the words without worrying if I’m oversharing or hurting someone’s feelings.
[UNPUBLISHED:] What is one non-music-related topic you wish interviewers talked to you about?
[ALIX PAGE:] My high school experience and my hometown.
[UNPUBLISHED:] What is one random fun fact that not many people know about you?
[ALIX PAGE:] Hmmmm.
