Thomas Day Sings About Wanting Someone To Break Your Heart In Newest Single “MASOCHIST”

We’ve all been there. We see that person online or on the street that we end up romanticizing in our heads for the rest of the day. And we become so obsessed with them that we would even let them just break our heart, and gladly. It may feel ridiculous, but it is true. Singer-songwriter Thomas Day in his latest single “MASOCHIST” details this resonating experience entirely. Released on April 21st, the power pop single describes what it is like to be so obsessed with some that you would just let them hurt you to feel it. Partnered with the release of “VICIOUS” on February 10th, Thomas is entering an exciting new era defined by an exploration of different highs and lows within emotions and unforgettably compelling pop instrumentals. In a conversation with Unpublished Magazine, Thomas discussed his latest singles, upcoming tours, and his excitement for the rest of the year.

[UNPUBLISHED]: Thanks for sitting down with us today! We’re almost halfway through the year, how has 2023 been treating you so far?

[THOMAS]: 2023 has been really, really fun. I feel like it's been honestly very calm and I feel like from a music standpoint, I've been writing like crazy. Honestly, more than I ever have. I don't know if it's because of the new year, but I've loved it so far.

[UNPUBLISHED]: How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?

[THOMAS]: I feel like it depends on your mood. I feel like my music changes, I have a lot of different moods of music for the listener. Like, if you're sad, you're about to be really, really sad. If you're happy or if you're angry, it's all there. So I mean take it as you will, whatever you're feeling. Listen and I promise you, it will come to you.

[UNPUBLISHED]: You just released your latest single “MASOCHIST” – congratulations! How are you feeling?

[THOMAS]: Thank you. I'm loving it. It was definitely a crazy song to make when I first started writing it melody wise in my basement. This is typically how I write my songs, but I was in my basement and it was like 2 AM and I sort of started thinking of melodies. It was really fun. I've been really excited. I feel like it's had such a good impact so far and I feel like people are just loving it. A good second song after my last single "VICIOUS."

[UNPUBLISHED]: Can you tell me about what inspired this song?

[THOMAS]: So the song is basically just about being obsessed with somebody, like honestly, that's all it is. In general, it's funny because it's kind of a play on words in a way because I remember just scrolling, watching a video or something. But, people will see an attractive person and be like, "Oh, I'll let you break my heart." That wasn't the sentiment, but somebody said that to me the other day and I was like, oh my gosh, wait that low key is because the song goes like, "yeah, break my heart, please, do it again.” And I was like wow, it's kind of interesting that way. But, it's basically just about being obsessed with somebody and it's not that you don't care, it's like you almost keep your guard down on purpose because no matter what, you're so obsessed with this person it doesn't matter.

[UNPUBLISHED]: What does your writing process look like? What do you draw inspiration from?

[THOMAS]: I mean, it all depends. Now that it's summer, I'm definitely in that more of a happy vibe. Even though I'm generally a sad person. I feel like just naturally whenever I'm writing songs, it's 100% relevant to whatever I'm going through with personal experiences and stuff. Sometimes I will find inspiration off of little things. But, my writing process in general, I usually get in this mood and I usually write my songs in like two minutes. And it's usually really late. But, it's like a freestyle type vibe. But it's also not. Because I freestyle lyrics and I'll listen back and be like, "Oh my gosh, oh, that's so good." Lyrics and melodies, like on piano and I'll just roll with that. It's not even freestyling, but it almost is. You know when you're writing and it just comes naturally to you and you're just writing without even thinking about the other thing and the sentence just flows. It all depends on my mood. I mean, "MASOCHIST," it wasn't like a sad song but it was just like, "I'm kind of in this situation now and I'm not trying to escape it." But, with songwriting in general – emotions, sadness, it's usually just authenticity.

[UNPUBLISHED]: For your latest single “MASOCHIST,” the music video featured a lot of really cool visuals and colors. What was the vision and story you had in mind when creating it?

[THOMAS]: Me and my buddy Logan, we had this thought process for it. Throughout the whole thing, it's kind of just me in my head. I'm thinking in my head all about my thoughts and stuff and thinking about this girl who I was, by the concept of the song, madly obsessed with. And the first time I wrote about it I was like "Oh, yeah, it's real. I'm obsessed with somebody." I feel like naturally with the song, it's like me daydreaming and I keep on seeing this girl in my head. The whole entire thing, it's a daydream. But, it keeps on switching back and forth. If you watch it, there's a scene where it's obviously me singing the chorus but it will switch as if the girl is there. But, she's actually not there, it's all in my head. My shirt gets ripped and shriveled and it's burned and stuff. It was really fun. I loved it so much. It was super hot though.

[UNPUBLISHED]: Where was it filmed?

[THOMAS]: It was filmed in Topanga, Los Angeles. It was like in the hills and it was on this ranch, which was really sick. The road that we were driving on, it was so steep. We were all the way kind of on the top of this mountain and it was crazy. We had three main spots and there was this one dressing room and the toilet was outside with no walls around it. I obviously didn’t use the restroom. I felt like I was in Midsommar or something.

[UNPUBLISHED]: I read that it’s been two years since you decided to pursue music full time instead of football. How do you feel now that you’re where you’re at now?

[THOMAS]: I'm so happy. I'm honestly so so happy. Even when that decision was was was up in my face, I knew. I mean, I've done music my entire life and I did sports my entire life and I was super competitive in that. But I mean, for me, I've been through a good amount of stuff and as an emotional human being, I knew that what was going to help me long term was going to be music. And also it just brought me a bunch of joy as did sports like hockey, soccer, and football, of course. But, music was the way to go. I feel like with the decision, now that I'm in the position I'm in, I'm very, very happy and very thankful that I wasn't naive.

[UNPUBLISHED]: Do you still play sports outside of music?

[THOMAS]: I go around and play soccer or something. I like to work out a good amount. I don't want to be like that jock singer guy. But, I like to stay in shape, it's something that I just love.

[UNPUBLISHED]: What have you been listening to lately? What’s on your radar?

[THOMAS]: I've been listening to a lot of Neon Trees to be real. I'm like a big fan. Those two songs "Everybody Talks" and "Animal" are so good. I've been listening to Dominic Fike. My favorite, ballad wise, is FINNEAS. I've always been obsessed with his ballads my entire life. My buddy Francisco Martin released this song called "Passenger Princess." It's so fucking good. If you like indie music, you should listen to it.

[UNPUBLISHED]: For those who want to experience your music live, do you plan on touring soon?

[THOMAS]: I had a show in Los Angeles and then I'm gonna have a show in like a week and a half in New York. And then some festivals in the UK this summer and then eventually probably a headline tour this summer at some point or me opening for somebody.

[UNPUBLISHED]: Do you have a favorite song that you like to perform live?

[THOMAS]: VICIOUS” is fun. Because it’s up tempo, it’s so fun. People love it.

[UNPUBLISHED]: You’ve been releasing music for some time now. What are some goals that you have achieved so far and what are goals that you want to achieve in the future?

[THOMAS]: What I'm really excited about is this year, I'm just gonna have a massive song and my label knows it. Everybody I feel internally knows, it's just waiting to pop. I am so excited for not knowing which song that's going to be. But, also knowing because I've teased a bunch. I've teased like eight songs and all of them have blown up. And I'm in this position to where it's like one of them is just gonna go nuts dude and I'm just so excited for that. My buddy Benson blew up in like '21. He had a song called "GHOST TOWN" and "In The Stars" and they were huge, massive songs and I haven't really had that which I feel like has allowed me artistically to develop. And I feel like I've never been more prepared and I'm so excited for the rest of this year because once it goes, it's gonna go and it's gonna go crazy. I'm just excited. I've been writing so much.

[UNPUBLISHED]: Is there anything else that you would like readers and listeners to know?

[THOMAS]: Just be ready for new music in the future, a tour in the future. If you want to see more of my unreleased songs, if you've become in love with one of my songs that's out, I have like 500 unreleased songs and there's literally like seven released ones, they can follow me on "thomasdaymusic" on Instagram. But, just be excited for the new music and just be ready because it's gonna be a really, really good year.
